Century plant's flowering is once-in-a-lifetime event

Source : Dallas News
Else Horosko says seeing her century plant in bloom is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In fact, she had despaired of seeing it flower before she died.

Agave americana, a Texas native, is supposed to bloom after 10 to 15 years, but Mrs. Horosko, 76, planted the specimen in her Oak Cliff back yard 37 years ago. For the last few years, she has watched the plant hopefully – and, in recent years, anxiously – for the tip of a blooming stalk to appear from deep within the center of the gray-green rosette of tough, spiny, thick leaves.

Else Horosko has been waiting 37 years for her century plant to bloom. Now that her wait is over, she must bid her garden companion of three decades farewell. After it blooms, the century plant dies.

Mrs. Horosko could only admire the pale yellow flower from its underside, because the stalk soared high above her head, standing 12 feet or more. "It's the funniest thing. The buds have been closed up to now," she said in her accented English. "It's not exactly a flower. Oh, I don't know. It's very unique." Read more..

Valentines day is back once again...

Valentines day Roses / flower deliveryThere are different opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day though all of us celebrate with Red roses. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine. Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor “Juno”, the Queen of the Roman Gods and the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars and each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar who would then be partners during the festival. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families and Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples. Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with Lupercalia and chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration, which then became “Day of lovers” worldwide into modern day Valentines Day and Flowers, esp. Red Roses became popular gift for the day.

Roses are the most popular flower

Roses are the most popular flower sold at florists and flower markets, and enjoy more than 2/3rd share of the flowers sold worldwide. Rose has become the symbol of love, affection, and friendship and so popular that the colors represented some sign of emotion.

History says other wise - roses were not always the top florist flower before 1850s due to their seasonality in bloom. Birth of Hybrid roses since then changed the whole story. Hermosa (China, light pink, <1837) was the first hybrid tea rose to make a big splash in the florist market and is the first rose that could bloom during the winter. Safrano (apricot, 1839), Bon Silene (Red) are two hybrid tea roses became popular after Hermosa. As rose gained popularity, more and more hybrid roses produced with deep red in color and long-stemmed roses. It was during this time around 1900, that roses became one of the most popular florist flowers, replacing carnations.

In recent times Grand Gala (long stemmed) and First Red both are hybrid tea roses which attracted most flower buyers in most part of the world. Now these two Red roses are facing stiff competition from newer verities like Royal Baccara, Upper class as these flowers have bigger flower size and better vase life.
