Century plant's flowering is once-in-a-lifetime event

Source : Dallas News
Else Horosko says seeing her century plant in bloom is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In fact, she had despaired of seeing it flower before she died.

Agave americana, a Texas native, is supposed to bloom after 10 to 15 years, but Mrs. Horosko, 76, planted the specimen in her Oak Cliff back yard 37 years ago. For the last few years, she has watched the plant hopefully – and, in recent years, anxiously – for the tip of a blooming stalk to appear from deep within the center of the gray-green rosette of tough, spiny, thick leaves.

Else Horosko has been waiting 37 years for her century plant to bloom. Now that her wait is over, she must bid her garden companion of three decades farewell. After it blooms, the century plant dies.

Mrs. Horosko could only admire the pale yellow flower from its underside, because the stalk soared high above her head, standing 12 feet or more. "It's the funniest thing. The buds have been closed up to now," she said in her accented English. "It's not exactly a flower. Oh, I don't know. It's very unique." Read more..

Valentines day is back once again...

Valentines day Roses / flower deliveryThere are different opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day though all of us celebrate with Red roses. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine. Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor “Juno”, the Queen of the Roman Gods and the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars and each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar who would then be partners during the festival. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families and Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples. Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with Lupercalia and chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration, which then became “Day of lovers” worldwide into modern day Valentines Day and Flowers, esp. Red Roses became popular gift for the day.

Roses are the most popular flower

Roses are the most popular flower sold at florists and flower markets, and enjoy more than 2/3rd share of the flowers sold worldwide. Rose has become the symbol of love, affection, and friendship and so popular that the colors represented some sign of emotion.

History says other wise - roses were not always the top florist flower before 1850s due to their seasonality in bloom. Birth of Hybrid roses since then changed the whole story. Hermosa (China, light pink, <1837) was the first hybrid tea rose to make a big splash in the florist market and is the first rose that could bloom during the winter. Safrano (apricot, 1839), Bon Silene (Red) are two hybrid tea roses became popular after Hermosa. As rose gained popularity, more and more hybrid roses produced with deep red in color and long-stemmed roses. It was during this time around 1900, that roses became one of the most popular florist flowers, replacing carnations.

In recent times Grand Gala (long stemmed) and First Red both are hybrid tea roses which attracted most flower buyers in most part of the world. Now these two Red roses are facing stiff competition from newer verities like Royal Baccara, Upper class as these flowers have bigger flower size and better vase life.

Say it with Flowers

Flowers are the best gift for everyone, there are certain color codes and rules for different occasions. Also, some colors have different meaning in different geographies. A yellow rose or flower in general means friendship including in India, while it will break a relationship if it is gifted to Russian. In general following these will help avoid embarrassment.

FLOWERS ARE universally given and accepted as a wonderful, thoughtful, warm gift. Giving gifts is part and parcel of social interaction. No other gift can match the versatility of a single flower, which can express joy, gratitude, romance, sympathy, or an apology for that matter!
Flowers have their own language and symbolism based on the type and colour. The meaning of flowers was so well developed that in 17th century Turkey, secret messages were conveyed through flowers! This secret language was popular enough in Europe for the French to codify the first flower dictionary in the year 1818.

To give an example, while a red roses or carnation was sent to give the message, "my heart aches for you," one dreaded receiving a striped carnation back which meant, "A no; Refusal or Sorry" a rather civilized way of saying, "Buzz off". Interestingly one could always reply to that with a yellow rose/carnation, and it would tell the recipient, "You have disappointed me". If a single red rose is received as the answer, you have a slight problem because the sender has decided to ignore the refusal and just declared his undying love for you.

If you are in Japan, you might want to avoid giving white lilies, or chrysanthemums, which are associated with funerals. They are also superstitious about potted plants, as it is believed to encourage sickness. If you are gifting a bunch of flowers to a Japanese then make sure that it has more or lesser than four flowers, because number four in Japanese is `shi', which is also the word for death.

While in China, avoid giving yellow or white flowers and zooming across to Europe, flowers are often taken to a hostess of a dinner party at her home. Remember that red roses mean "romance, secrecy and passion," while yellow roses can signify "jealousy". Avoid even number of flowers, which signifies bad luck, as does 13 in a bunch. White lilies or chrysanthemums again are associated with funerals.

Flowers are appropriate gifts in Latin and Central American countries, but certain colour needs to be avoided. In Guatemala, white flowers are associated with funerals, while in Mexico or Brazil, purple flowers have the same connotation. Therefore, when traveling abroad, check what the local significance is; you can avoid the embarrassment of sending unwanted messages.
Apart from these little quirks in flower giving or sending flowers, follow some basic guidelines and you will come out a winner.
  • Flowers are appropriate practically for any occasion. Check the local custom.
  • Gifting flowers spontaneously creates the best of goodwill and cheer.
  • Don't forget that a nice potted plant is also a great hostess gift, as well as when you are visiting someone who is convalescing.
  • It is a good idea to gifting flowers or sending either before the party, or the next day. Otherwise, she will have to busy herself looking for a vase to put the flowers in, taking her away from her hostess duties.
To learn more on what color, in general, would be more appropriate visits this link.

Use Copper Vase to keep flower fresh

Flowers in Vase - Bangalore Florist
All flower lovers like to keep the flowers looking fresh for as long as possible. .In general, keeping flowers in a vase with good water, by changing water alternate ay, can improves life of the flower. Cut an inch or half from the bottom of the stems of the flowers every day when you change the water in the vase. A clean angular cut is better than a square cut at the bottom of the stem.

In case of woody stemmed flowers like the chrysanthemum, lilac and other flowering shrubs, the stems must be split up to the middle with a used razor blade or knife, for several inches.

An interesting and simple method to make the cut flowers stay fresh for a long time is to use copper Vase. Flowers, which are put in copper vases, remain fresh for two or three days longer, due to the fact that a certain amount of copper particles get into the water and hinder the growth of bacteria, which causes the flowers to wilt.

If a metallic copper vase is not available, put a few copper coins or cut pieces of copper into the vase. It is believed that a copper vase in the presence of light, produces a type of electro culture. Certain varieties of cut flowers such as, roses, gerbera, carnations, etc., last longer than the others

India might import flowers due to growth in domestic market

The Rs 1,300 crore Indian floriculture industry is set for a dramatic shift. All this while, the focus was on promoting floriculture exports from India, but with the domestic market for flowers growing India may not have flowers left to export and could well turn out to be a net importer of flowers.
retail chains in India are waiting to add flowers on to their shelf if they can be assured of regular supplies of quality flowers round the year. Bharati and Reliance have been talking to the floriculture industry in the hope of tying up with a well defined supply chain, Currently there is a flower buying population of 300 million in the cities and that this market was growing at 40% per annum.
Flower retail shops have mushroomed all over incities like Bangalore, Chennai, Bombay, Pune, and the retail chains have fuelled this growth in consumption. In the next five to six years India is going to be among the biggest consumers of flowers and India might not have flowers to export. The share of domestic market turnover is Rs 1,000 crore while only Rs 315 crore comes from exports. Delhi accounts for 40% of the Indian market but transporting it was an issue. Another boost would come from the opening of the Floriculture Auction Centre at Goregaon in Mumbai in the next few months.

Delhites Hearts bleed with soaring rose prices on Valentine's Day

New Delhi, Feb. 14 (PTI): The price of expressing love got higher this year, as rates of roses went through the roof this Valentine's Day with a single stem costing more than Rs 20 in the national capital.

Delhi, which is India's largest flower market in terms of consumption, received a record supply of about 20-lakh cut roses during this Valentine's Day. "The number of cut roses, which gathered momentum from February 9 for the Valentine's Day, increased to as high as 20 lakh," Delhi-based flower wholesaler said. Prices also went up to Rs 400 per bunch of 20 roses of best quality in Delhi, which has an estimated Rs 50 crore annual business in floriculture, a trader said. However, only a few good-quality long-stemmed cut roses received that amount, and the average wholesale price was in the range of Rs 7.50-10 per cut flower.

Apart from Bangalore and Pune which are the regular suppliers to Delhi market, Hyderabad also sent roses to the capital city this year.

Not only roses, even rates of other flowers also went up this Valentine's season, traders said. Carnation and lilies from Himachal Pradesh are also said to have commanded good price. Red carnation was sold at Rs 150 a bunch comprising 20 cut flowers while Oriental lilies went up as high as Rs 60 per piece and Asiatic lilies received Rs 25-30 per stem. Flowers were also received well in the international market as Indian cut roses quoted up to Rs 15 for the 80cm-long stem variety. However, Indian exporters who received Japan's largest order to any country, an exporter said.

"Demand for roses in Japan does not increase during the Valentine's Day as Japanese prefer to gift chocolates," he said. Even as Indian exporters look forward to overseas market in this season, some countries like Thailand are eyeing the Indian market for a share. Imported Heliconias from Bangkok were sold in the range of Rs 125-175 per piece in Delhi.
