India might import flowers due to growth in domestic market

The Rs 1,300 crore Indian floriculture industry is set for a dramatic shift. All this while, the focus was on promoting floriculture exports from India, but with the domestic market for flowers growing India may not have flowers left to export and could well turn out to be a net importer of flowers.
retail chains in India are waiting to add flowers on to their shelf if they can be assured of regular supplies of quality flowers round the year. Bharati and Reliance have been talking to the floriculture industry in the hope of tying up with a well defined supply chain, Currently there is a flower buying population of 300 million in the cities and that this market was growing at 40% per annum.
Flower retail shops have mushroomed all over incities like Bangalore, Chennai, Bombay, Pune, and the retail chains have fuelled this growth in consumption. In the next five to six years India is going to be among the biggest consumers of flowers and India might not have flowers to export. The share of domestic market turnover is Rs 1,000 crore while only Rs 315 crore comes from exports. Delhi accounts for 40% of the Indian market but transporting it was an issue. Another boost would come from the opening of the Floriculture Auction Centre at Goregaon in Mumbai in the next few months.
